ALCESTER Rugby Club have begun pre-season training ahead of their return to league action in early September and for the first time in six seasons they are doing that with a new head coach.

Keith Beech stood down at the end of last season after a successful spell and has been replaced by Chris Johnston, who already has extensive coaching experience.

Training takes place at Kings Coughton from 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and new players of all ages (17 and upwards) and experiences will be made especially welcome.

Anyone interested in playing can turn up at the club on training evenings or contact director of rugby Stu Phillips on 07843 080865.

As well as a new coach, Alcester will also have a new club captain, Phil Birks, who captained the side previously eight years ago.

He will be assisted by another former skipper, Jack Green, who he has chosen as his vice-captain. Sam Fell will continue as 2nd XV captain for another season.

Off the field at the club’s AGM in June, six of last year’s committee were re-elected, headed by Andy Flynn who begins a second season as club chairman.

Club stalwart Peter Lewis Jones, who has held several committee positions in the past, was invited to become president of the club. He replaces Andy Miller who had a very active three seasons in the role and will continue to be a regular face at the club.

One position which has not yet been filled is that of physio/first-aider on match days. Anyone interested can also contact Stu Phillips on the number above.

After Alcester’s Rugby Force day, the club has been tidied, fixed and smartened ready for summer activities and functions at the club.

The 2018/19 Midlands Three West (South) campaign begins on September 1, but Alcester start their season at Berkswell & Balsall on September 8.
