No surprises as games go to form

DESPITE a lacklustre performance by Lodge Farmers, it was still enough to see off opponents Well Developed who fielded only nine players in week seven of the Swan Studley Skittles League.

Well Developed fell behind by eight pins after leg one before sharing the spoils in leg two and then reducing the arrears to six pins by winning leg three.

Lodge Farmers’ response was to win both the remaining legs by narrow margins to take the game. That left Well Developed rueing not having a full team, which might well have enabled them to win their first game of the season.

For Lodge Farmers, the win was their fourth on the bounce as Tim Jones made 35 and Roger Powell, Jason Kirk and Glyn Morley 33 each. Frustrated Well Developed had Margueritte Bayley scoring 40 and Ros Pottinger and Martin Brennan 34 apiece.

Swan also fielded a below full strength team – just eight players – and they never looked likely to ruffle a rampant Engineers who won each of the five legs by big margins to take maximum points on their way to recording their best pin total to date.

Craig Ellis and Mark Ganderton both made 41 – Ellis with a 14-stack – and Ian Greenway 39. Luckless Swan had a top score of 34 from Bob Haycock and 32 each from Graham Howells and Sally Racki.

Jumbo Jet Set won the first three legs, each by a small margin, to build a lead of only nine pins against Team BG, but any ideas from Team BG they could overturn the deficit were quickly stifled when they managed only 51 pins in leg four against Jumbos’ 70 pins.

The game was effectively over at that point and Jumbos went on to take maximum points. Rich Johnston 40 (14-stack), Len Quartly 38 and Mick Stanton 35 scored well for Jumbos. Gail Stringer made 40 (ten-stack) – her second 40-pin score of the season – while Nina Moore made 36 and Mary Withers 35.

Meanwhile, last season’s champions Maudslay top the table for the first time this season after a comfortable win over Swingers thanks to Mark Sanseverino’s 42 (stacks of 11 and ten) and 37 each from Dean Watson and Dick Watson. Swingers’ best were 36 from Russell Victory and 34 from Paul Clifton.

Results: Lodge Farmers 8.5 (306 – ten players and 286 – nine players) Well Developed 2.5 (275 – nine players); Engineers 10 (348 – ten players and 305 – eight players) Swan 1 (239 – eight players); Team BG 1 (299) Jumbo Jet Set 10 (334); Maudslay 9 (326) Swingers 2 (294).
