Nomads secure impressive victory

Redditch Editorial 16th Oct, 2017   0

ALCESTER NOMADS enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Well Developed in week two of the Swan Studley Skittles League.

There was little between the teams for three legs as Nomads led by just five pins after leg one before Well Developed levelled the score in leg two.

Leg three saw Nomads again take the lead but only by six pins, leaving Well Developed thinking they were still very much in the game.

However, up stepped Nomads’ Eddie Upright with a 13-pin stack in leg four and, with his team-mates also scoring well, they took the game away from their opponents.

Nomads were then 19 pins ahead before extending their winning margin by taking leg five as Upright finished with 46 pins (top individual league score this season), Bob Browning 36 and Gordon Povey 35.

Best for Well Developed were Ros Pottinger with 33 and Liz Hindson and skipper David Searle with 32 each.

There was little between Maudslay and Jumbo Jet Set in a game edged by Maudslay thanks largely to a 13-stack by Dick Walters in leg three.

At that stage Maudslay led by eight pins – a lead extended to 11 after leg four – but following a poor leg five score it left Jumbos wanting 71 for victory.

Jumbos came close but fell just seven pins short as they narrowly missed a stack of their own which might have reversed the result.

Dick Walters’ final score was 40, while team-mates Lyn Fryer made 37 and Dave Ford, Carlo Sanseverino and Jack Watson 35 apiece as Maudslay went joint top.

In reply, Jumbos’ Len Quartly scored 38, Rob Quartly 36 and Pete Battle-Welch 35.

Last season’s bottom team Alley Cats were always up against it in the game with Team BG.

Alley Cats, a player short, were only four pins adrift after two legs but then the wheels came off as Team BG took leg three for a 17-pin lead.

The game was effectively lost at that stage for Alley Cats and their opponents took advantage to run out comprehensive winners, taking the last two legs by substantial margins.

Malcolm Batchelor and Anne O’Connor both bowled well for Alley Cats in making 35 (13-stack) and 34 respectively, while Tony O’Connor scored 30 but they could not inspire their team-mates.

For Team BG, Ray Cartwright scored 35 (14-stack), Jordan Cockette 34 and Mary Withers 33 to help their team to a first win of the season.

Results: Alcester Nomads 9 (326) Well Developed 2 (303); Maudslay 8 (332) Jumbo Jet Set 3 (326); Alley Cats 2 (253 – nine players) Team BG 9 (303 – ten players and 290 – nine players).
