Nominations open for Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards

NOMINATIONS are now being welcomed for the 2015 Herefordshire & Worcestershire Sports Awards as preparations begin for what promises to be another fascinating look at the sporting talent within the two counties.

Worcester Warriors’ Sixways stadium will again play host to the glittering awards night in November and for the second year running Bullivant Media – publishers of the Redditch Standard – is sponsoring the headline Sports Personality of the Year award – one of 14 honours to be given out.

Members of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire community are now invited to put forward candidates who they feel deserve recognition for their sporting achievement and dedication to sport within their community.

Stephen Brewster, Director of The Sports Partnership, said: “This event is our chance to honour our local sportsmen and women, coaches, volunteers, clubs and officials.

“Over the years, we’ve received such huge support for the awards and feel it’s important the local community get their say on who has made an impact on sport, young people and local communities.

“Recognising sporting achievements and celebrating good practice within the sporting community is at the very heart of what we do and we will be championing the hard work and talent that exists within Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

“As such, we are thrilled to announce nominations for this year’s awards open and look forward to receiving and welcoming nominations for our local sporting heroes.”

The 2014 Sports Personality of the Year was Worcester Warriors star Chris Pennell and the full back gave his backing to the awards, describing them as a “fantastic celebration of local sport”.

“Last year’s event was brilliant. I was taken aback by the calibre of the sportsmen and women in the room during the event at Sixways and felt incredibly humble to receive the award,” said the 28-year-old.

“When you look at the achievements of the likes of Moeen Ali and Sascha Kindred OBE and also see the superb achievements of the many youth teams and youngsters who were up for honours, we should be incredibly proud as a region of these people.

“There were so many stories of people achieving sporting excellence against the odds, which puts everything into context, and the two talks given by Vicky Holland and Mel Nicholls were inspirational.”

Pennell, who of course is preparing for a return to the Aviva Premiership following Warriors’ thrilling Championship final play-off victory over Bristol, said Sixways was the ideal venue for the awards evening.

“We are aiming to become one of the top sports teams in the country and part of that is of course the facilities at Sixways, so it really is a fitting place for the awards to culminate,” he added.

The annual event, which is attended by more than 250 amateur and professional sports people, local businesses and dignitaries, will take place on Wednesday, November 4.

A full list of this year’s categories and registration for nominations can be found at Nominations will close on Friday, August 28 at noon.
