Walkwood lads are kings of the district

WALKWOOD CE Middle School’s year six and year five boys’ football teams have each been crowned Redditch Schools seven-a-side football champions.
The year six squad triumphed with a 100 per cent record in their tournament at Woodfield Academy.
Walkwood won all six of their matches to top the pile with 18 points as they proved too hot for the opposition to handle.
First up were St Bede’s and the Walkwood team really brought their A game to the pitch as they secured a 3-1 victory against one of the pre-competition favourites.
Wins against Ridgeway, Woodfield, Birchensale, Church Hill and Ipsley then followed as Walkwood conceded just two goals in the tournament.
St Bede’s were runners-up with 13 points.
The Walkwood squad consisted of Jamie Kelman, Archie Clarke, Jak Clarke, James Lev, Ollie Hands, Mitchell Brookes, Bailey Mills, Matt Tipton and Rhys Thomas.
Despite having had just one full training session together and one match the week before the event, Walkwood’s year five team showed great maturity and teamwork to produce some fantastic football.
After starting with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Woodfield, Walkwood had to win their remaining two group games against Birchensale and Church Hill to qualify for the knockout stages.
They rose to the challenge as two fine performances saw them go through to the semi-finals in which they beat a strong St Bede’s team.
The final pitted Walkwood against Woodfield and this time it was Walkwood who prevailed.
Their 4-2 win means the school has now won the district tournament at year five, six and seven level.
