Redditch girls prove they can kick it on the international stage

THE WORCESTERSHIRE County Schools’ FA girls’ squad (WSFA) did their towns, county and country proud as they reached the last 16 of the Gothia World Youth Cup in Sweden.

Eighty nations competed in mixed age groups of boys and girls and the Worcestershire girls – featuring a strong Redditch presence – performed superbly to reach the last 16 out of 112 girls’ teams in the under 15 age group, despite many of the squad being aged 13.

The Gothia Cup is the world’s largest and most international youth football tournament. Each year, around 1,600 teams from 80 nations take part and play 4,500 games on 110 fields.

A spokesperson for the Worcestershire team said: “The girls had an amazing experience and played in some highly competitive matches. The atmosphere and organisation was wonderful.

“We aim to compete again next year and are looking for local businesses that would be willing to sponsor the team for the tour and the upcoming season.

“As a county representative side that is open to pupils within all schools in Worcestershire, we have very limited funding to support our programme.

“We are organised by a group of dedicated volunteers that consists of teachers, university students and parents who all combine to provide the best possible experience for pupils.

“The tour itself requires a team of coaches, support staff and physios and unfortunately not all the girls in the current squad could afford to attend, so this year we will be aiming to raise enough funds so the full squad can compete and ensure we can provide them with the best available support staff to succeed.”

If you would like details of this exciting sponsorship opportunity which could see your company logo on a majority of sporting wear this season, match day programme and in the next Gothia World Youth Cup, or you would like to donate to the team, then please e-mail Gary Barrell at [email protected].
