Reds boss content with pre-season form

REDDITCH United manager Liam McDonald is delighted with the early pre-season form of his side as they continue preparations for the new campaign.

The Reds drew 1-1 at Pershore Town on Saturday before winning 3-0 at Sutton Coldfield Town on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s friendly at Droitwich, McDonald said: “I’m really pleased with how things are looking. At Pershore it was useful to look at a number of trialists and then at Sutton we fielded a stronger team and we played very well against a side who are now at the same level as us.

“We have pace and power up front which is always a good thing to have in your armoury and we have half a dozen midfielders who really know how to play in this league.

“It was good to see Jim Mutton play alongside Will Richards at centre back on Tuesday and I am really excited at the partnership they can form.”

McDonald, whose side host Stourbridge in the Worcestershire Senior Cup quarter-finals on Saturday (3pm), watched Jarrell Hylton net for the Reds on Saturday before Daniel Dubidat, Jamie Molyneux and Luke Shearer hit the target on Saturday, and he is keen for his side to maintain their momentum against the Glassboys.

“It’s (Worcestershire Senior Cup) a competition we’d like to win, of course, but we won’t deviate from our pre-season plan and, if there’s things I’d like to experiment with, then I will,” added McDonald.

“All that matters is getting three points at home to Cirencester Town on the opening day of the season and that won’t be easy. They beat us twice last season and that was not an easy thing for any side to do.

“Then we go to Kettering Town in the first midweek and that puts us against one of my old managers Marcus Law, who was brilliant to play for and a top man, so that’s a really exciting fixture for me personally.”

The Reds have been drawn to host Aylesbury United in the first round of the Red Insure Cup and the tie will take place in the week commencing October 12.

Elsewhere, Swindon Town have been charged by the FA over the manner of their signing of Reds star Jermaine Hylton in January.

It is alleged the League One club approached Hylton without giving seven days’ formal written notice to United, whose chairman Chris Swan revealed his anger at the time to the manner of the approach and who has since welcomed the charge.

If Redditch win on Saturday, they will host Kidderminster Harriers in the WSC semi-finals on Monday, but if they lose they will entertain Highgate United in a friendly on Tuesday.
