REDDITCH United will begin their 12th consecutive campaign in the Southern League Premier Central Division once again looking for promotion following a respectable mid-table finish last season writes William Rogers
The Reds’ fans have a lot to look forward after an unbeaten pre-season which included victories over Cradley Town, Studley, Rugby Town and AFC Blackpool.
There were also draws against Pershore Town, Evesham United and Worcester City as the side prepares for their opening match of the season at Hednesford Town on Saturday.
Matt Clarke’s men started strongly in their final pre-season match against Worcester City at The Trico last weekend, with an own goal from the City goalkeeper following a powerful shot from Lewis Hudson putting them ahead.
However, the visitors fought back, not overawed by their higher league opponents, Sean Brain hitting the post before the ball rebounded into the Reds’ net for an equaliser just before half-time.
The second half was more of a scrappy affair with only a few chances for either side, but ending pre-season undefeated is a major feat for Clarke’s men.
Redditch have been busy off the pitch too, bolstering their forward line with the signings of Reece Flanagan, Bernard Mensah and Ryan Nesbitt, following the departure of striker Dan Sweeney to Bromsgrove Sporting.
Redditch scored the second fewest goals in the division last season, so they will hope for more firepower to push up the league.
Following runaway leaders Banbury United’s promotion to the National League North, the division looks wide open and if Redditch’s front line get going then there may be some entertaining days ahead for the fans.
After Hednesford, the Reds play their first game at The Trico when Kings Langley are the visitors next Saturday (August 13) before a local derby against Stratford Town on August 15.
