RUGBY LEAGUE - Hurricanes blown away by league leaders Keighley

MIDLANDS Hurricanes head coach Rich Squires believes his side have “a lot to learn” from unbeaten league leaders Keighley Cougars after they were thrashed 54-6 at Portway.

Chris Cullimore scored the home side’s only try, converted by Ben Stead, towards the end of the first half after Keighley had already crossed for four tries of their own.

And Cougars touched down six times after the break to surpass the 50-point mark as Hurricanes struggled to keep up with the division’s best side who have won all 15 of their league matches this season.

Squires said: “The effort is there in some areas – in others we could be better, but we’ve come up against a very good team that just kept their foot on our throat for the full 80 minutes. That’s why they’re unbeaten and top of the league.

“There are a lot of ifs and buts for us at the minute and we need to be a little more patient – we try to score every time we get near the line and it’s killing us a little bit.

“We’ve definitely got some attacking strike there, we’ve just got to put it together – but there is some flair there.

“They haven’t conceded more than 18 points in a game all season – they’re a good team and we’ve got a lot to learn from them.”

Hurricanes were behind after just three minutes when Aaron Levy scored the game’s first try before Mo Agoro crossed for the 12th consecutive match and his 26th try of the season.

Levy doubled his tally for the day with Cougars’ third score before Toby Everett further extended the visitors lead on the half-hour mark.

The home side finally found a way through the Keighley line when Cullimore crashed over shortly before half time.

However, the influential Jack Miller ran in a second-half hat-trick with Alix Stephenson scoring a brace and Everett also touching down to ensure Hurricanes wait for a league win continues.

The Midlands club sit eighth in the Betfred League 1 table having lost their last five matches.

Hurricanes are next in action away at Hunslet on Friday, July 29 with kick-off at 7.45pm at South Leeds Stadium.
