RUGBY LEAGUE - Midlands Hurricanes suffer third straight defeat away at Rochdale

MIDLANDS Hurricanes suffered a third consecutive league defeat after they were beaten 44-24 by Rochdale Hornets.

Tries from Hayden Freeman, Jordan Bull, Benn Hardcastle and Liam Welham proved in vain as the Hurricanes were blown away in the second half at the Crown Oil Arena.

The result leaves the Midlands club in eighth place in the Betfred League 1 table.

Head Coach Rich Squires said: “In parts we looked very dangerous and when we can do that for periods of time we cause teams danger.

“Unfortunately we are just not consistent enough and offer teams pressure releases which allows them an easy way out.

“We need to be more game smart but that comes with the team playing together more.”

After a scoreless opening 10 minutes, Rochdale scored two tries in quick succession as Ben Forster and Cian Tyrer both touched down.

Hurricanes responded when Freeman dotted down his 50th professional career trey in the corner to score his eighth of the season.

And the Midlands side were level when Bull crashed over from close range after Rochdale were penalised for offside.

Hornets player Dan Nixon edged the home side back in front with a simple try before Hardcastle produced a trademark dummy to score and send the teams in level at the break.

However, Rochdale dominated the second half and ran in two more quickfire scores through Paul Brearley and Fuifui Moimoi.

The visitors kept themselves in the contest when L Welham exploited some sloppy Rochdale defending to pull Hurricanes back to within one score of their opponents.

However, Gavin Bennion, Tyrer and Gregg McNally all scored tries for the Hornets to take the game out of the Hurricanes reach and inflict a third straight defeat on the Midlands club.

Hurricanes have a bye week before they return to action away at Keighley Cougars on Sunday, May 22 with kick-off at 3pm at Cougar Park.
