ST BEDE’S Catholic Middle School has long held a reputation for sporting success and this was further enhanced by a series of impressive achievements in recent weeks.

The Holloway Lane school’s year seven basketball team made history by becoming the first Worcestershire school side to reach the last 16 of the under 12 National Basketball Finals in Manchester.

“The boys have performed brilliantly all year and are also into the knockout phases of the JR NBA Midland Basketball competition,” said assistant principal Matthew Russell.

“They demonstrated all the skills and tactics they have learned this year in the National finals and looked at home against some of the best schools in the country.

“We were undone as we had no 6ft players, but the boys have developed so well since the beginning of the year and they should be really proud of what they have achieved already this year, with hopefully more still to come.”

THERE were celebrations for the year seven boys’ football team who won the Worcestershire County Cup with a 6-0 victory over St Nicholas CE Middle School in the final at Redditch United.

Tom Price scored a hat-trick, George Wynne struck twice and Millen Durham also found the net for St Bede’s.

Having seen off Hanley Castle High School 4-3, Stourport High School 5-0 and Bredon Hill Middle School 1-0 to reach the final, St Bede’s again rose to the occasion to win silverware.

Their triumph brings an end to a highly successful season for the team, who have improved game by game, beating some impressive sides along the way.

The St Bede’s squad was Stan Amos, Tom Cronin, Elliot Ray, Rupert Callow, Charlie Fearnall, George Wynne, Paul McCarthy, Tom Price, Luke Baldwin, Millen Durham, Matt Smith, Oliver Cockram and Krystian Kubala.

THE YEAR eight and year seven St Bede’s girls’ teams starred at the under 13 district hockey tournament, in which the year eights were victorious with a 2-0 win over Walkwood CE Middle School in the final and the year sevens lost to the same opposition in the semi-finals.

Searing temperatures at Redditch Hockey Club made playing conditions tough, but St Bede’s produced some excellent team and individual play as both captains led by example.

A highlight for the year sevens was the inspired decision to move Evah Melsom from her role in defence up to left forward, resulting in two well-taken goals in their second match.

Meanwhile, the year eight side reached the final with a 2-0 win over Woodfield Academy to book their place in the final against Walkwood.

Before the match, St Bede’s skipper Kershaw said “silver would be OK, but gold is the only colour that matters” and, after months of practice during the winter months, the determined girls secured a deserved tournament success.

The St Bede’s year eight team consisted of captain Phoebe Kershaw, Sophie Butler, Kinga Greda, Erin Woods, Codie Holland, Eadie-Mae Houghton-Court, Hira Nisar, Hollie Tapscott and Rosie Mills and the year seven squad was Hollie Fuszard, vice-captain Lucy Hatfield, captain Connie Dodd, Evah Melsom, Aoibhe Williams, Iona Rogers, Ayla Ozturk and Kiera-Leigh Phillips.
