Top five finish delights Alcester Town manager

ALCESTER Town ended the season as they began it with a victory over Burntwood Town to seal a fifth placed finish in Midland League Division Three.

Saturday’s 2-1 success in Staffordshire was not a game for the purists but Town player-manager Robbins was a satisfied man after seeing his side end the campaign in the top five.

“It was an awful game in all honesty. We really struggled to play with any quality but the lads dug in and made sure we earned the three points,” said Robbins.

“To finish fifth in the league, considering my remit when I took over was to just make sure we had enough players to start the season, is fantastic and all credit to the lads for that.

“It has been a season of transition. The run we went on in the middle part of the season (11 wins out of 13) was superb and the lads have done me proud.

“I can’t wait for next season already. There will be changes and I will be working hard to bring in the right players and the right characters to take us forward and I am confident we will have a successful season.”

Town were without the injured Chris Hill, John Beacham, Nick Dance and Steve Nurse and faced a home side who were playing down the slope in the first half.

The visitors took the lead when top goalscorer Matt Layton got himself on the end of a fantastic Leon Blundell cross from the right to head home.

Burntwood hit back shortly before half time when the Alcester defence failed to deal with yet another long ball forward and Burntwood striker Daniel Newton cut inside to curl home into the far corner to bring his side level.

Alcester could have regained the lead but both Layton and Lamar Simms were denied in quick succession.

After the break and now attacking down the slope, Alcester managed to get more of a foothold in the game and chances came and went for Matt Trinder and the impressive Blundell.

The hosts created a couple of half chances on the break but nothing to particularly worry visiting goalkeeper Paul Dipple.

The winner arrived ten minutes from time and again it was Blundell with the ball in from the right and Levoniel Anderson’s clever flick fell nicely for Layton who side-footed home his 37th goal of the campaign to seal victory.
