ALCESTER Town moved into the top six of Midland League Division Three with a hard fought 2-1 home win over Barton United on Saturday.

The visitors arrived at Stratford Road third in an extremely congested table but have now dropped below Town as a result of their defeat.

Meanwhile, James Robbins’ Town side are only looking upwards, especially after closing the gap on top two Leamington Hibs and FC Stratford to nine and seven points respectively as a result of the duo’s weekend results.

Next up for Alcester is Saturday’s (3pm) visit of Boldmere Sports & Social Falcons and player-manager Robbins is seeking another good performance.

“I am looking for the same levels of performance as last weekend,” said Robbins.

“Boldmere gave us a really good game last month in the Challenge Vase (2-1 to Alcester) and I am expecting the same on Saturday.

“We have come through a period of games against sides at the top end of the table and have done extremely well.

“We now have a spell against the sides at the other end and we will be looking to continue our good form.

“We won’t underestimate anybody in this league because, the moment you do, you get caught out and it’s clear from recent results elsewhere that anybody can beat anybody regardless of league position.

“We have 12 league games remaining now. That’s a lot of points still to play for and we will be doing all we can to keep chipping away at the sides above us and pull ourselves towards the top of the table.”

Leading scorer Matt Layton gave Alcester a first half lead on Saturday when he latched on to a Steve Nurse through ball and lobbed the visiting keeper with an excellent finish from outside the box.

The lively Nick Dance set up the second goal when he beat two men before cutting the ball back for Nurse to fire home into the roof of the net.

Sloppy defending allowed the visitors to reduce their arrears just before the break and it took a fine last-gasp save from Richard Layton to ensure maximum points for the hosts.

Matt Trinder completes his three-match ban this weekend and winger Dance is also unavailable, whilst Adam Trinder is still struggling with a hamstring injury.
