VKL are victorious in Vinay's honour

THE REDDITCH & South Warwickshire Combination schedule was once again plagued by bad weather on Sunday but one match which did go ahead over the weekend was for a very worthy cause.

Saturday evening’s encounter between VKL United and Astwood on Redditch United’s artificial pitch was played in memory of Vinay Kishor Ladwa.

VKL now play an annual charity fixture in memory of their much-loved former player who died in September 2013 and VKL did their man proud as they secured a 3-1 victory.

A VKL spokesman said: “It was a fantastic event and a great game of football to be part of.

“VKL would like to thank everyone who supported the event, the Redditch league for arranging the game, Redditch United for allowing us to use their facilities, Astwood for doing their part in making the night a memorable one and everyone who attended.

“These events help us keep Vinay’s memory alive and that means so much to so many of us.”

Last year’s event raised almost £1,500 for Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and proceeds from this year’s match – unknown at the time of going to press – will go to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

VKL took the lead midway through the first half when Sam Osmond headed home a superb left-wing cross from close range before Astwood equalised soon afterwards through Andy Hayes’ fine 20-yard strike.

Chances were created regularly at both ends in the second half before Osmond scored his second goal of the evening midway through with another header to put VKL 2-1 up.

With ten minutes to go a fine cross from the left found Charlie Jones who controlled the ball in the box and fired home to complete the scoring.
