Williams keeps his nerve to seal victory for C&G Show

IN THE week’s closest Swan Studley Skittles League game, anchorman and last bowler on the night Dave Williams took all nine pins as his C&G Show team beat Swan by a single pin.

The win, in a game in which they were always trailing, was not enough to lift C&G Show off the bottom of the table but they are now within touching distance of the other strugglers.

Dave Ortis, Angela Guest and another Williams (Chris) made 36, 35 and 34 respectively for the winners. Swan’s best scorers were Charlie Withers’ 37 (14-stack), Bob Haycock’s 36 (12-stack) and Graham Howells’ 34.

Elsewhere, it was business as usual for the top four teams as they all won their games to open up a big points gap over the rest.

However, for leaders Maudslay it was an indifferent performance. Despite leading by ten pins after leg two, they could not shake off Swingers who were level after leg four and an upset looked possible until Maudslay made the game’s highest leg score in their last leg to see off their plucky opponents.

For Maudslay, Keith Fryer scored 40, Mark Sanseverino 37 and there were 36 pins each for Carlo Sanseverino and Dean Watson. Swingers had Russell Victory making 40 (14-stack), Daren Harman 36 and Christine Hallam 34.

Second placed Engineers took a first leg lead of 21 pins against Well Developed and went on to win comfortably.

Well Developed did snatch a couple of leg points to close up to the teams above them in the table and had Ron Skidmore and Liz Hindson scoring 33 apiece and captain David Searle 32.

In reply for Engineers, Pete Clewlow made 39 (12-stack), Mark Ganderton 37 (14-stack) and Brandon Kelso and Luke Saunders 34 each.

It looked likely that Jumbos Jet Set would collect maximum points against Team BG, only for the latter to spoil Jumbos’ party by sharing the last leg.

Sixteen pins ahead after leg one, fourth placed Jumbos pulled steadily away but only by one or two pins over the next three legs as Team BG went close to getting back into the game.

In good form for Jumbos were Geoff Turrell with 43 (14-stack), Rob Quartly (41) and Ray Jones (36). Team BG’s best were Nina Moore with 37, Rob Baker’s 36 and Stuart Stringer with 35.

Maximum points went to third placed Alcester Nomads over an Alley Cats side two players light.

However, after two legs the points difference in Nomads’ favour was only eight pins.

Leg three then decided the game for Nomads who opened up a 25-pin lead which they increased over the remaining legs.

Tony O’Connor of Alley Cats made 41 (10-stack) and team-mates Pete Sollis 37 and Anne O’Connor 35. Nomads’ Tony Moore made 38, Geoff Lout 37 and Bob Browning 36 (13-stack).

Results: Chris & Gerry Show 7 (303) Swan 4 (302); Maudslay 8.5 (315) Swingers 2.5 (307); Engineers 8 (325) Well Developed 3 (302); Jumbo Jet Set 9.5 (329) Team BG 1.5 (308); Alcester Nomads 10 (321 – ten players and 282 – eight players) Alley Cats 1 (248 – eight players).
