Woodrush clinch second Redditch United Schools Cup crown

WOODRUSH High School were crowned winners of the eighth Redditch United Schools Cup after seeing off Ipsley Academy 3-0 in the final at the Trico Stadium.

The home of Redditch United was once again the venue for the final of the competition, which is organised thanks to generous support from TRUST (the Redditch United Supporters Club) and Redditch United, who provided a fantastic facility, commemorative medals for all the players and food after the game.

Year eight teams from secondary schools in the district have played each other in two leagues, with play-offs used to decide who progressed through to the final.

Last Thursday’s triumph is a second in the history of the event for Woodrush, whilst Ipsley remain with one tournament victory to their name despite a valiant effort.

After a frenetic start, with play going from end to end, Woodrush started to get on top with some dangerous attacking play and Ipsley keeper Eden Haining was called on to make some good saves.

A superb flowing passing move ended with a great finish from Alex Murray to open the scoring for Woodrush.

Ipsley countered and thought they had won a penalty, but a free kick was given on the edge of the box and Woodrush cleared.

The second half started with Ipsley posing an immediate threat as they looked to level the score, but Woodrush increased their lead when Murray scored his second after a mistake from the Ipsley defence.

Ipsley showed great character in fighting back, urged on by the enthusiastic chanting of their supporters, and had a chance to pull one back when the ball was squared to Corey Phillips but Max Bromwich-Lee pulled off a good save.

A Woodrush counter-attack led to a penalty which was calmly slotted in by Kye Billingham to make it 3-0 to Woodrush.

Ipsley kept going but in the end, after a very enjoyable game played in the right spirit, it was the clinical finishing of Woodrush which proved the difference.

Reds manager Darren Byfield presented the trophy and medals and named Woodrush skipper Murray man of the match for his two goals and a fine attacking display.
