Woodrush power to convincing win

ANOTHER excellent performance by the Green & Whites on Saturday saw them maintain their position at the top of the league and extend their winning league run to seven matches at a chilly Icknield Street.

After both Ed Gardiner and Steve Smart had to withdraw due to injury, the opportunity arose for 17-year-old Luke Sinclair to step up for his first team debut and he grasped the opportunity with both hands.

The home team started the game at a whirlwind pace with Titch Thomas crossing after only two minutes and Andy Poole following up with a second try on ten minutes.

Park fought back having run the journey out of their legs and were unlucky not to respond with points after applying considerable pressure across the park.

Jon Ford added a third try on 34 minutes as Woodrush began to wrestle the momentum back from the visitors and the sides turned around with the home side 21 unanswered points to the good.

The second half turned into something of a rout as the Nuneaton side ran out of steam in the face of a green and white onslaught.

Dan Lavander crossed after just one minute of second half play, Thomas went over for his brace and the impressive Mike Loughrey crossed again soon afterwards.

Ed Lerna was next into the act before Anton Taylor added another soon afterwards.

Poole and Loughrey then completed their own doubles before the referee called time on what had become something of a mismatch.

Josh Tomlinson had a good day with the boot, landing six conversions.

This was a very business-like and clinical performance from the home team which, given that fellow title challengers Dunlop and Bedworth both posted scores of 60-plus points, was important in giving a signal of intent in this highly competitive league.

Woodrush host Old Wheatleyans on Saturday as the second half of the league campaign begins.
