WOODRUSH responded to a mixed start to the season with a resounding victory over struggling Pershore at Icknield Street on a pleasant Saturday afternoon.

With captain Steve Smart back in the line-up, along with coaches Jon Ford and Dan Lavander, Woodrush were able to field just about their strongest team of the season so far and they wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in a blistering opening period which saw five tries scored by the 20-minute mark.

First to cross was poacher extraordinaire Andy Warrilow wide on his right wing after just three minutes following good phase work by the green forwards.

Warrilow added his second try four minutes later, this time coming off his wing to score on the opposite flank.

Anton Taylor added a third on ten minutes before expert handling by Andy Poole in the centres put Ford through a significant hole in the Pershore line and Ford measured the finishing pass to perfection to set up Jay Attwater who crossed for his debut first team try.

The bonus point was secured after 13 minutes and it looked very bleak for the men from Wyre Piddle.

The home team kept up their high-tempo assault and Warrilow completed his hat-trick on 20 minutes to put the home team 31-0 up, with the prospect of records tumbling.

In fairness to the visitors, they tightened their game up considerably at this point and enjoyed a good period of possession, asking a number of questions of the home defence.

Combined with this, The Rush were guilty of taking their foot off the gas and at half time the sides turned around with no further change to the scoreline.

Strong words were delivered at half time by captain and coaches alike and a suitably chastened home side sprinted out of the blocks in the second 40.

Coach Ford crossed within a minute of the restart and Warrilow was not to be kept out of the action as he ran through brick walls to score his fourth try four minutes later.

A superb solo break by Kris Duce saw him cross two minutes later and, with the visitors’ defence suffering shellshock, James ‘Flash’ Gordon showed his considerable pace to sprint clear on the left wing.

After four tries in a devastating ten-minute spell, teams of a lesser character would have crumbled, but incredibly Pershore regrouped and, in something of a re-run of the first half, Woodrush failed to score again.

In summary this was a good win for Woodrush but there is plenty of room for improvement. It was a confidence-builder against a side who are looking favourites for relegation this year, but the 40 minutes of quality will need to be built upon by The Rush as there will be much tougher challenges ahead in this league.

Sixth placed Woodrush, who have 11 points from four matches, return to league action on October 24 at pointless Harbury.
