Kings Norton golfers reign supreme

THERE was glory for Kings Norton Golf Club players as they were successful in winning the West Midlands League Final at Handsworth Golf Club on Sunday.

This is the first time Kings Norton have won this trophy since it was launched in 1967 and the silverware now sits proudly in the club’s trophy cabinet.

The opponents were Swindon GC in a repeat of last year’s final but this time there was a very different outcome as Kings Norton won 3.5-0.5.

Kings’ journey to the final consisted of 14 league games to finish third in their zone, with 17 points from a possible 28 as they qualified for the knockout stages.

The knockout stages were played on a home and away basis and in round one against Enville the home leg was won 2.5-1.5 and the away leg finished 2-2, so Kings were overall 4.5-3.5 winners.

Quarter-final opponents were Druids Heath who were beaten by the same scoreline, although this time after a draw on home soil.

There was a 4-0 home win over Dudley in the semi-final home leg which proved key in a 6-2 triumph and then came glory in the final.

Team captain Mark Birchill would like to thank his entire squad of players for their combined efforts to bring home the silverware.
