Redditch maintain advantage ahead of key encounter

Redditch 8 Newtown 2

West Midlands Division One

REDDITCH continued to set the pace at the top of the table as they defeated their visitors from Wales on Saturday in a game umpired by familiar faces Nick Haynes and Wayne Beard.

The hosts started well but had to be patient as the breakthrough did not come until midway through the first half with a goal from club top goalscorer Harry Capewell.

He added a second goal 12 minutes later before Newtown pulled one back following a Redditch defensive error to make it 2-1 at half time.

Redditch started the second half impressively and Andy Billingham made it 3-1 before in-form Capewell completed his hat-trick with a well finished effort.

Newtown pulled a goal back to make it 4-2 before Redditch made the most of their possession dominance and superior fitness with four more goals in the last 15 minutes.

Man of the match John Styzaker scored two quickfire goals with shots from the top of the D before Capewell – now playing with a broken finger following a strong tackle from one of the Newtown midfielders – scored his fourth goal of the game to take his season tally to 13.

Styzaker scored the final goal to complete the second hat-trick of the match after some good play by veteran Dan Waite.

Despite the convincing scoreline, unbeaten Redditch will need to play better quality hockey this Saturday when they visit second placed Leamington, who are only one point behind the Kingfishers.
