WITH only a single win out of the six matches played, it was a week Alcester Bowling Club will wish to forget.
Having beaten Stoke Prior the previous week in the away match in Division Three of the Yardley Wood Superleague, the A team fancied their chances to complete the double in the return match at Alcester.
However, with just two winning cards from Carole Slater (21-5) and Jean Bannister (21-17), this was never going to happen and Alcester crashed to a 32-shot defeat, giving the visitors 16 points to the home side’s two.
In Division Four, the B team visited West Midlands Travel and had three winners and a creditable 21-20 loser, but it was not enough to avoid defeat by 15 points to three. Mike Rowell was outstanding for the visitors at 21-6, with good wins also from John Slater (21-9) and Mike Ryland-Jones (21-14) in a 12-shot deficit.
Heart of England League action took Alcester A to Stoke Prior A in a Division Two match and a second heavy defeat of the week on this green brought a 41-shot setback to the visitors, with only John Alderson and Margaret D’Elia (both 21-15) able to produce winning cards. The result was a 16-2 triumph for the home side.
The only win of the week came in Division Five when the B team entertained Marston Green B. A 31-shot victory brought 15 points for the home side against just three for the visitors.
Successful for Alcester were Mike Rowell (excellent at 21-6), Ken Harvey (21-10), Jean Sherrington, Peter Barber (both 21-13) and Mike Ryland-Jones (21-16).
The Heart of England Over 60s League brought cup games for both Alcester teams. In the main competition the A team were drawn against Yardley Wood Social on the neutral Kings Norton Ex-Service ground.
A 13-shot defeat saw Alcester exit the competition, with only Renny Bannister (21-10) and Margaret D’Elia (21-16) having wins.
In the Consolation Cup the B team also exited this competition with a 19-shot defeat at the hands of Woodlands Park C on the Moseley Cricket Club green. Again, just two winning cards accrued, from Red Masterson (21-12) and Mike Rowell (21-17).
