IT WAS a moderately successful week for Alcester Bowling Club as the B team won all four of their matches.

The week started, however, with a defeat when Alcester A visited Weoley Castle A in Division Three of the Northfield League.

Winning cards from Jean Bannister (21-12), Ken Harvey (21-19) and Trish Barry (21-20) were not enough to prevent a 34-shot defeat for Alcester.

Another huge victory for the A team came in Division Six of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League when they entertained Co-op B.

With four of the six players recording single-figure wins, Alcester stormed to a 71-shot success to pick up six points to the visitors’ nil.

Alcester’s winning cards were Jean Bannister (21-4), David Whittington (21-6), Renny Bannister (21-7), Ken Craddock (21-9), Ken Harvey (21-14) and John Slater (21-15).

After two weeks of inactivity in Division Seven, the B team scraped home by just a couple of shots when they visited Moorpool B.

A superb 21-3 win for Margaret D’Elia was backed up by David Hodgson (21-16) and Jean Craddock (21-20) and gave the visitors a 9-3 reward.

Another close game took place in Yardley Wood Superleague Division Two when Alcester A visited Tanworth B.

Although the winning margin was a mere five shots due to the strange scoring system in this league, Alcester collected 42 points to the hosts’ eight.

Excellent cards came from Ken Harvey and David Whittington (both 21-7), with John Alderson (21-10) and Dave Hovell (21-16) putting the icing on the cake.

In Division Four the B team returned to action after a two-week lay-off to record another narrow victory when they hosted Henley B.

Winning cards from Carole Slater (excellent at 21-7), Gill Evans (21-11), Val McDermott (21-13) and Margaret D’Elia (21-16) gave Alcester an eight-shot victory and 28 points to the visitors’ 12.

Alcester’s Heart of England League Division Two promotion hopes suffered a setback when the A team visited Moseley Cricket Club A and fell to a 41-shot defeat.

They had just two winners in Brian Lees (21-12) and John Alderson (21-14) as the hosts picked up 16 points to Alcester’s two.

In Division Four the B team had a big victory in their home match against Ye Olde Knowle B, winning by 65 shots and collecting 16 points to the visitors’ two.

Excellent cards from Margaret D’Elia (21-5), David Sutor (21-7) and Jean Craddock (21-8) were well supported by Carole Slater (21-11), Val McDermott (21-12) and David Hodgson (21-14).

In the over 60s section of the Heart of England League, Alcester A suffered a huge defeat when they visited Colebrook A in Division One.

Without a single winner, they crashed to a 69-shot mauling to leave relegation now staring them in the face.

In the final match of the week, the B team hosted Henley B for the second time in the week, on this occasion in Division Five of the Heart of England Over 60s League.

Alcester dropped just a single shot as they cruised to a 48-shot victory as superb wins from Jean Craddock (21-3) and John Willis (21-7) were backed up by Margaret D’Elia (21-14), Trish Barry and David Hodgson (both 21-16) to give the hosts a 15-1 win.
