ALCESTER Bowling Club again experienced mixed fortunes in the latest round of fixtures, although they did win more matches than they lost as a result of one nail-biting success.

In Division Three of the Northfield League, Alcester visited Central Edgbaston A. Although they had four winners in Dave Hovell (21-14), Geoff Spiers and Ken Harvey (both 21-17) and Rick Horton (21-19), the home side’s four winners were by larger margins, resulting in a 24-shot defeat for Alcester.

Both teams in the South & West Birmingham Over 60s League were victorious. In Division Six the A team visited Woodlands Park B and came away with 11 points from their 17-shot success.

Alcester had winning cards from Margaret D’Elia and Renny Bannister (both 21-13), Jean Bannister (21-14), John Slater (21-18) and Ken Craddock (21-20), leaving the home side with just a single point.

In Division Seven the B team hosted West Midlands Travel B and recorded an excellent 43-shot win. A storming 21-4 win for Red Masterson hardly bettered the wins for Jean Craddock (21-7) and Dave Hovell (21-8), whilst Gill Evans (21-11) added another point to the tally to give Alcester an 8-2 success.

Alcester A easily brushed aside the challenge of Triplex B in Division Two of the Yardley Wood Super League, winning by 52 shots to gain 34 points to the visitors’ three.

Superb wins for Dave Hovell (21-4) and Ken Harvey (21-6) were backed up by Renny Bannister (21-11), Jean Bannister (21-12), John Alderson (21-15), Ken Craddock (21-17) and John Slater (21-20) and the victory takes Alcester to the top of the league table.

In Division Four the B team visited Bournville Sports B where they went down to a 22-shot defeat. Alcester had three winning cards from Red Masterson (21-15), Trish Barry (21-15) and Jean Sherrington (21-19).

Heart of England League action brought a visit to Hockley Heath A for Alcester’s A team and the closest match of the week resulted in a win for the visitors by a mere three shots.

Alcester’s winners were Dave Hovell (21-11), John Alderson, Ken Harvey (both 21-13) and Brian Lees (21-14). This gave Alcester a 14-4 victory, lifting them to second place in the table.

The B team in Division Four had things a little easier when they entertained Black Horse B. In winning by 19 shots Alcester gained 15 points to the visitors’ three.

Successful for the home team were Trish Barry and Jean Sherrington (both 21-13), David Whittington and Carole Slater (both 21-14) and Red Masterson (21-16).

In the over 60s section of the Heart of England League, Alcester A took the journey to Ye Olde Knowle A’s dreaded green which resulted in the almost inevitable defeat by 60 shots.

Alcester had no winners, giving the hosts a 16-0 success and sending Alcester to the bottom of the table.

The B team experienced almost a reverse of A team when they hosted Co-Op B and a 44-shot success pushed Alcester to the top of Division Five.

Winning cards came from Dave Hovell (majestic at 21-5), Trish Barry and David Whittington (both 21-9), Carole Slater (21-13) and Red Masterson (21-15), his fifth win in five matches across the week.
