Midlands Three West (South)

THIRD-PLACED Berkswell & Balsall proved far too strong for Alcester who failed to score any points in Saturday’s defeat which dropped them a place to seventh.

The visitors applied early pressure which paid off after a series of scrums and short-range drives when their number eight crashed over and the extras were added.

His celebrations were shortlived though as the number eight found himself on the receiving end of a yellow card for persistent infringement and was forced to leave the pitch for ten minutes.

However, Berkswell kicked a successful penalty before capitalising on an Alcester mistake when the home side were careless with the ball – throwing it away in contact before Berkswell collected and scored their second try.

The visitors took a 15-0 lead into the break but not before they were penalised with another sin-binning.

It was an even opening to the second half but it was not long before Berkswell took charge again and scored two more tries to earn themselves the bonus point.

Despite the visitors’ ill-discipline and high penalty, Alcester continued to struggle and conceded another try before full-time.

Alcester resume league action at lowly Burbage on January 25.
