Alcester Grammar School hockey aces savour South Warwickshire glory

ALCESTER Grammar School’s under 14 girls’ seven-a-side hockey team turned on the style to win the South Warwickshire tournament at Stratford School.

The triumph was Alcester Grammar’s first for ten years in this event and comes hot on the heels of the school’s under 14 girls’ team being crowned South Warwickshire netball champions.

AGS took top spot in the five-team competition thanks to 1-0, 1-0 and 2-0 victories over Stratford, Shottery and Shipston respectively and a 0-0 draw with Kineton.

The team was made up of captain Amity Fenton, Isobel Bridge, Millie Fitchford, Celia Wright, Jemma McCarthy, Erin Wood and goalkeeper Emilie Cooke.

AGS PE teacher Rachael Bradshaw said: “The team worked fantastically well as a unit, especially as Emilie Cooke stepped in at the last minute to cover as goalkeeper.

“It’s fantastic to have under 14 South Warwickshire champions in both netball and hockey.

“We are grateful the area of South Warwickshire involves a cohort of local schools and staff that greatly support the participation of hockey.

“As a school we are keen to introduce young people to various sports and are delighted to see a number of pupils have now taken this further by joining external clubs.

“This has undoubtedly provided the team with valuable experience in competitive sport, perseverance and team values.”
