BOWLS: ALCESTER Bowling Club enjoyed a successful week after chalking up five wins from six matches, with a number of very close results.

Certainly the closest match of the week came against visitors Kings Norton in Division Three of the Northfield League, with Alcester winning by a single shot to gain six points to the hosts’ five.

Starring for the visitors was John Alderson with a superb 21-4 card, whilst other wins came from Renny Bannister (21-13) and Ken Harvey (21-16).

In the South & West Birmingham Over 60s League, only the A team were in action this week with a visit to Woodlands Park C in Division Six. They came away with an easy 42- shot victory, gathering 11 points to the hosts’ one. Alcester’s five winners were Ken Harvey (21-7), Jean Bannister (21-9), Ken Craddock (21-10), John Slater (21-12) and Renny Bannister (21-20).

The A team returned to winning ways in Division Two of the Yardley Wood Superleague when they entertained Maggies A. Five winning cards came from John Slater (21-7), Ken Craddock (21-9), Jean Bannister (21-11), Peter Barber and Renny Bannister (both 21-14). Despite winning by 39 shots, Alcester might perhaps consider themselves a little unlucky to collect only 30 points to the visitors’ nine, as two of the team lost 20-21.

In Division Four,Margaret D’Elia (21-3) and Red Masterson (21-6) had superb cards to help the B team collect a six-shot victory at Maggies B. David Hodgson (21-13) and Rick Horton (21-19) also impressed.

Despite the narrowness of the victory, Alcester nevertheless picked up 34 points against the visitors’ eight due, for the second week in succession, to the strange scoring system in this competition.

The Heart of England League saw another close game when the A team visited White Hart A for the return match in Division Two. Excellent cards from Renny Bannister (21-5) and John Alderson (21-8) ensured a close result, with Brian Lees (21-19) adding a third point for Alcester. The visitors went down by just four shots, to the club’s only defeat of the week.

The B team enjoyed quick revenge at home to Wythall B in Division Four. The 19-shot defeat the previous week was converted to a 21-shot success, as they collected 15 points to the visitors’ three.

Winning cards for the home team came from Red Masterson, David Whittington (both 21-10), David Sutor (21-13) and Rick Horton (21-16).
