CROWN green bowling in Northfield League Division Three saw Alcester entertain King George V’s B team and, although the home side had wins from John Alderson (superb at 21-6), Ken Harvey (21-9), Jean Bannister (21-11) and Dave Hovell (21-20), they were beaten by 11 shots, thus accruing just four points.

The A team continued their formidable start in the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League with a shattering 90-shot win over visitors Ye Olde Knowle D in Division Seven.

For the third time in a row Alcester produced a whitewash, with five out of the six players recording wins to single figures. Jean Bannister and Margaret D’Elia (both 21-2), Ken Harvey (21-4), David Whittington (21-5), Renny Bannister (21-7) and Val McDermott (21-16) demolished the opposition to record what is thought to be the club’s biggest ever win and earn ten league points.

The B team travelled to West Midlands Transport to take on their B side, but with little success, losing by 28 shots. Winning Alcester cards came from Eric Allport and John Williamson (both 21-11).

Both teams travelled to neutral greens in round one of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s Cup. Both were knocked out – the A team by 38 shots against Rubery Sports John Connelly and the B team by 69 shots against King George V. Alcester’s only winner was the A team’s John Slater (21-19).

Yardley Wood League action found the A side visiting Maggies A and coming away with just two winners – Dave Hovell with an excellent 21-9 and Renny Bannister (21-20) – in this 25-shot defeat. Narrow defeats were suffered by Jean Bannister and John Slater (both 21-20) and Carole Slater (21-19).

Things went better for the B team, who won by 17 shots when hosting Hockley Heath B. Margaret D’Elia was superb at 21-6, with David Hodgson and Val McDermott both winning 21-13. However, without a 21-0 card resulting from one of the visitors not turning up, Alcester may well have lost.

In the Heart of England League Alcester A visited Woodbourne A, where they were heavily beaten by 59 shots. Only Ken Harvey (21-9) and Carole Slater (21-18) won for the visitors.

In Division Four Alcester B entertained Wythall B, with both sides having four winners. However, Alcester had brilliant cards from David Hodgson (21-3), Jean Sherrington (21-6), Red Masterson (21-7) and David Whittington (21-8) to give the home side a 46-shot winning margin.

Over 60s Heart of England action gave Alcester A just two winners in Division Two against Hockley Heath A, with Renny Bannister (21-12) and Margaret D’Elia (21-17) doing the business in a 13-shot defeat away from home.

The B team ran riot at home to Moorpool A in Division Five to produce a 71-shot win. Half the team won to single figures, with outstanding cards from John Willis (21-4), John Williamson (21-7) and Christine Anderson (21-8).

The remaining three players also won – Val McDermott (21-10), David Hodgson (21-12) and David Whittington (21-14) – to record 16 league points.
