Astwood Bank look forward to visit of table-toppers

CRICKET: ASTWOOD Bank will view the visit by table-toppers Handsworth tomorrow (Saturday) as the opportunity to showcase their own high-flying credentials, says captain Steve Adshead.

Bank were frustrated by the weather for the third time in four matches so far this season in the Birmingham League Division Three last season as their match at Aston Manor was abandoned.

Having scored 286 for nine after being put into bat, Astwood Bank then had the hosts rattled at 73-3 before the rains intervened.

But Handsworth, promoted from the Warwickshire League last season, were the only team in the division last weekend to claim a win, defeating previously unbeaten Pershore to move four points ahead of their beaten rivals.

Adshead’s men, however, lie fifth, 24 points off top spot, and determined to turn promising positions into victories.

“It will be a big game against the team that’s at the top of the table, but we will look forward to the challenge,” said Adshead.

“The first month of the season has been frustrating, unfortunately, you can’t control the weather. But I’m really happy with the way we are playing at the minute.

“The league is very tight. There have been a lot of no-results but we’ve already seen this season and throughout last year that there’s little between the teams.

“We were second after six weeks last season and ended up fighting for survival. We ended up staying up after other people got docked points.

“It’s a league where things can change quickly. If we can continue with the form we’ve shown so far and if we can keep people fit, then from what I’ve seen there’s nothing to fear.”
