BOWLS - Hart teams exit Heart of England Cup

THE Hart Crown Green Bowling Club saw two of their over-60’s teams exit the Heart of England Cup at the second round stage.

Hart A were without three of their regular bowlers against Colebrook A as stand-in Jim Mahaffey (21-11) produced their best individual performance.

However, Neil Laxton (21-13) was Hart’s only other winner as the Redditch club were beaten 108-94 in a close affair.

Hart B were up against a strong Banbury Bowls side and were unable to produce a single winning card in a heavy 126-65 defeat as Sheila Humphreys (17) was their best scorer.

Elsewhere, in Division Four of the Heart of England Thursday League, Hart B beat Hockley Heath 168-106 which included wins to single figures from Jack Livingstone, Ged Dooner and Phil Hemming.




In the Northfield and District League, Hart B secured a comfortable 168-101 win against Wythall B as S Humphreys (21-4) and Neil Harrison, Mick Perrins and Dave Kings (all 21-10) produced fine performances.

However, in Division One, Hart A were beaten 157-132 at Colebrook A despite a respectable showing as Tony Moore (21-13) and Paul Matthews (21-18) secured two points for the Redditch club.


In the Heart of England League, Hart A suffered a 160-98 loss against Ye Olde Knowle A on a notoriously difficult green as Pete Davenport (21-14) and Dave Mahaffey (21-20) sealed consolation wins in their respective matches.

And in the Warwick and Worcester Premier League, Hart moved up to second in the Division Four table as they completed a previously curtailed match at The Maggies and picked up four points from a fixture at The Raven.

Against The Maggies, Pete Davenport (21-19) and Cameron Cutler (21-13) sealed an overall 193-165 victory for Hart which added to points gained by Kirk Wright (21-7), Tony Moore (21-15), Penny Moore (21-15) and Mahaffey (21-16).

At The Raven, Hart led by 43 shots after the first four ties courtesy of Davenport (21-12), Mahaffey (21-15), Cutler (21-11) and captain T Moore (21-3).

However, Paul Matthews (21-10) was the club’s only other winner as the tie turned dramatically in the Raven’s favour as Hart slipped to a narrow 156-151 defeat.

In the South West Birmingham and District Over 60’s League, Hart A remain unbeaten in Division Two following victory against Black Horse B as Graham Arnott, Ray Barnett, Neil Laxton and captain Mike Estell all won to single figures.

However, Hart B suffered a narrow 104-100 defeat in Division Three at Ye Olde Knowle C despite winning four of the six ties through Norman Batchelor (21-10), Mick Perrins (21-20), Rick Horton (21-12) and Malcolm Bird (21-20).

Lastly, in Division One of the Yardley Wood Superleague, Hart A were edged out 153-143 at home by Tanworth B as Phil Hemming (21-14), Laxton (21-19), Barnett (21-20) and Jack Livingstone (21-16) produced winning cards.

Hart B were beaten 158-123 at Woodlands Park as Malcolm Bird, and Derek Green (both 21-16) were the club’s only winners.
