WHITE Hart Crown Green Bowling Club’s A team clinched promotion to Yardley Wood Superleague Division One in a thrilling finale to the Wednesday evening season.

The Redditch club ran out easy 168-78 winners in their final match of the campaign at home to bottom of the table Wootton Hall, producing eight winning cards.

Hart had to wait for confirmation of the result in Kings Norton Ex-Service’s fixture before the celebrations could begin with their promotion rivals starting the night three points ahead of the Redditch club.

However, Kings Norton had just four winners in their victory against Warstock which allowed Hart to leapfrog them into second place and clinch promotion by a single point.

Hart’s final victory of the season started with Neil Laxton who eased past David Russell 21-4 before Paul Matthews followed suit with a 21-8 win against Peter Slade.

County bowler Pete Davenport defeated Ray Gough 21-11 whilst Graham Arnott beat Tony Wedgbury 21-14 to put the Redditch club in complete command at the halfway stage.

Hart picked up where they left off in the second half as David Mahaffey (21-10) and Steve Jones (21-11) took the game further out of Wootton’s reach.

And Hart completed a whitewash with Mike Estell’s 21-6 success and captain Kirk Wright’s 21-14 win against Wootton captain Ian Syson.

The promotion came despite Hart losing three of their opening four matches as the club made a remarkable recovery to win eight of their next 10 matches and secure their place in Division One next term having now achieved three promotions in the space of six years.
