Boxing club eyes new premises

BOXING siblings Maddy and Ty Adkins are among the fighters continuing to impress for Redditch club Bodyshot Boxing – but the club is in need of new premises to truly fulfil its potential.

Maddy, who earlier this year claimed victory in the Three Nations Championship and reached the final of the English Schoolgirls Nationals, pushed the European age and weight group champion all the way in her latest fight before ending on the wrong end of a controversial decision in Hull.

A day after that fight, her brother Ty bounced back from a narrow defeat at the Peterborough ABC show to enjoy a comprehensive victory in Selby, North Yorkshire, in which his opponent was given a standing count.

With Maddy preparing for a rematch against Legions ABC’s (York) Paris Smith next month and new Bodyshot recruit Taylor Ellis on course to be entered into championship boxing next year, things are hotting up for the club, but coach Carl Walton is keen for the boxers to have better facilities to enhance their skills.

Bodyshot Boxing is based above Omega Tiles & Bathrooms in Millsborough House, Ipsley Street, and Walton said of the situation: “We really need to have bigger and better facilities on a ground floor somewhere. This will open things up for much-improved equipment and facilities and put us in a position to apply for grants and the like which hopefully we’d qualify for.

“We need more seniors at the club and are looking at starting an over 30s class after Christmas. Ideally we’d like to be open all day.”

In the ring, Maddy was highly unfortunate to lose out to Smith, with England camp coaches in attendance among many believing she was the victor.

However, Maddy gets an immediate chance to set the record straight when she resumes battle against the same opponent at Walsall Football Club on Thursday, December 12.

Tickets (from the club) remain available and victory will put the 5ft 6in, 64kg fighter firmly in the England Boxing picture and then hopefully on course for success at the England Nationals around February and March.

To help Bodyshot Boxing improve its training facilities or to offer sponsorship, email [email protected] or call Carl Walton on 07817 545649.

Maddy and Ty would like to thank their main sponsor M&S Motor Services Ltd of Droitwich and Wayne Davis of WD Sports & Remedial Massage Therapy, Redditch.
