STUDIO Boxing Club fighters Jay Van-Gelder and Simon Ibekwe are in action at the England Boxing National Championships this weekend held at the Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury.
Van-Gelder, aged 17, faces off against Faisel Hussain on Saturday in the 52-56kg weight class for a place in the final – having won the Junior class title in 2019.
And Van-Gelder is now hoping to claim England Boxing’s National Youth Development title – having produced a flawless campaign thus far.
He boxed for and won the Midlands Youth Development title on his way to the semi-finals with a series of unanimous decision victories.
Should he win his semi-final bout – Van-Gelder would then compete for the title on Sunday.
Super Heavyweight boxer Ibekwe has earned himself a place in the pre quarter-finals of England Boxing’s National Senior Elites at the same venue after a huge win last weekend.
Ibekwe competes on Sunday in the 91+kg category and claimed the Midlands Elite Super Heavyweight title earlier this month with a superb performance in the final.
You can watch both fighters as the action unfolds live on the England Boxing YouTube channel by clicking here.
Both boxers have been training extremely hard and continuously show an immense amount of commitment and dedication to the sport.
Studio Boxing Club coaches Brian White and Gary Blower said:
“We are extremely happy with the progress Jay and Simon have made and believe both boxers are more than capable of going all the way.
“We would also like to mention and thank our sponsor and landlord Mr Darren Clarke of Distrykt & co estate management.
“Without his help and support, we would not be able to continue to work with local communities in Redditch and produce future champions like Jay and Simon.”
The club is based at Millsborough House in Redditch and has a BBBoC licensed gym and trainers with the gym self-funded by Van-Gelder and Ibekwe.
