Champions Alcester A end season with convincing win

Redditch Editorial 5th Oct, 2018   0

THE CROWN green bowling season drew to its close with two matches for Alcester A team and both results went with ground advantage.

The first game was in Division Four of the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League in which Alcester entertained Kings Norton B. The home side claimed their 17th victory of the season by a convincing 45 shots.

Leading the way was Margaret D’Elia with a resounding 21-2 success and sharing in the fun were Renny Bannister (21-9), Jean Bannister (21-12), Ken Craddock (21-15) and John Slater (21-17).

This 9-1 success leaves them top of the table by a huge 32 points.

The final match of the season saw the team visiting White Hart B for a Division Two match in the Heart of England Over 60s League.

With a depleted team, Alcester suffered a 14-shot defeat, dropping them to fourth place in the final table.

Alcester did pick up two winning cards from Bob LeResche (21-11) and John Alderson (21-20), but they had to concede the day to their local rivals.

The 14-2 success for Hart means they avoid relegation to Division Three and local rivalries will be resumed next season.

In the last action of the season, the club’s Hi/Lo Handicap round-robin doubles competition was held in the sun on a beautifully running green.

This attracted a large entry in a competition in which the more skilled players are paired with the less experienced, with each pair playing others in turn.

After a long afternoon’s bowling, Red Masterson and John Alderson finished in third place, with Barrie Banner and Margaret D’Elia in second place.

However, just four shots ahead in first place were Mike Ryland-Jones and Gill Evans with 58 shots.
