TOM Smith’s superb century helped Tanworth and Camp Hill to a five-wicket win against strugglers Long Itchington.

Smith hit 16 fours on his way to 104 not out as TACH reached the required target with five wickets and seven overs to spare at Tanworth Lane.

And Smith also took three wickers as TACH restricted Long Itchington to 218-8 in their 45 overs.

The result means Tanworth remain third in the Cotswold Hills League Premier Division table.

Long Itchington won the toss and elected to bat as opener Luke Brotherton (68) made a fast start in a 70-run first-wicket stand with Sam Green-Armytage (12).

Brotherton made the most of TACH’s bowlers repeatedly missing their line and length before Andy Turnbull (2-32) trapped Green-Armytage LBW.

And Brotherton then tamely chipped a full toss back to Smith (3-33) as the home side turned to spin to try and wrestle back control.

Tim Keyte (2-30) then claimed the wicket of George Insall (0) to leave the visitors on 89-3.

The introduction of spin saw the run rate drop as Long Itchington scored just 12 runs from the next 10 overs.

During that spell, Jake Wright (1-42) entered the attack as James Scott (39) and Jack Collyer (35) dug in for the visitors.

Long Itchington wicketkeeper Joe Scott (24 not out) chipped in with some late runs to help the away side close on 218-8.

In reply, Tanworth slipped to 67-4 as Sam Bishop (3-57) claimed the wickets of Lee Gill (8)n Turnbull (22) and Martin Perfect (0).

And after Freddie Hart (1-29) trapped Dan Williams (2) LBW, TACH found themselves in trouble at the end of the 13th over.

However, as James Carey (37) joined Smith at the crease, the pair set about rebuilding the innings.

A 104-run fifth-wicket stand set TACH on their way to victory with Smith the main aggressor before Collyer (1-35) bowled Carey.

Smith cantered to his first century of the season as he and Ben Bryant (24 not out) steered TACH to a five-wicket success.

Tanworth and Camp Hill host Kineton on Saturday, August 3 with the game to begin at 12.30pm at Tanworth Lane.
