Derby victory leaves Kingfishers targeting top three spot

REDDITCH enjoyed a 2-1 victory at Bromsgrove on Saturday to move within three points of their third-placed rivals in the West Midlands Premier Division.

The Kingfishers, now with nine league wins to their name, have a game in hand on Bromsgrove and will be going all out to try and finish in the top three, although it will be a tall order as two of their remaining four matches are against top two sides Sikh Union of Coventry and Solihull Blossomfield.

Redditch had most of the early possession on Saturday, with the hosts happy to sit deep and try to hit the Kingfishers on the break.

Midway through the first half some good link-up play and a skilful finish from veteran Chris Thomas gave Redditch the lead and soon afterwards Connor Adams made it 2-0 when he coolly slotted home from close range after the ball came awkwardly across goal.

Redditch were unlucky not to add to their tally before half time and were still in control of most of the possession until one of Bromsgrove’s counter-attacks pierced the Redditch back line and got the better of keeper Joe Cardy to reduce the hosts’ arrears.

However, there proved to be no way back for Bromsgrove and Redditch will be confident of claiming a sixth win in seven games when they visit second-bottom Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Redditch 2nds lost 5-1 to high-flying Warwick, the 3rds drew 2-2 with Old Wulfrunians and the 4ths were beaten 4-1 by Bromsgrove 5ths.
