Difficulties continue for Alcester BC

WITH only two wins out of seven matches, it was another week of gloom for Alcester Bowling Club.

On a saturated green, the A team in the S&W Birmingham Over 60s League visited West Midlands Transport A in Division Five.

The day started well enough for Alcester as Ken Harvey (21-14) and David Whittington (21-18) recorded wins, but Alcester were then caught out on a drying surface and only Ken Craddock (21-20) was able to add to their points tally as the hosts ran out winners by 27 shots. Alcester thus picked up three points to seven for the home team.

Yardley Wood Superleague action saw Alcester A travel to Selly Park A. The tricky green, unfamiliar to most of the visitors, proved too much for them as Selly Park ran out winners by 18 shots.

Carole Slater produced a fine 21-9 card, but only Renny Bannister (21-15) and Jean Bannister (21-17) could add to this. Alcester finally went down 15-3 to leave themselves in a relegation spot.

The B team in Division Four had a tense battle with visitors and old rivals White Hart, which finally went the home side’s way by just a single shot, giving them 14 points to Hart’s four.

Winning cards for Alcester came from Margaret D’Elia (21-9), Rick Horton (21-10), John Willis (21-15) and Gill Evans (21-18) to give them a 14-4 success and top spot.

The Heart of England League, in which both Alcester teams have yet to record a win, continued to be a minefield for Alcester as both fell to their sixth defeats of the season.

In Division One, the A team hoped ground advantage would help to reverse the heavy defeat they suffered the previous week at White Hart A.

This was not to be and, even though Alcester had a superb winner in Brian Lees (21-4), the team fell to a 32-shot defeat. Hart picked up 15 points to the home side’s three.

Alcester’s other winners were Ken Harvey (21-14) and Renny Bannister (21-20).

The B team suffered total disaster on their trip to Ye Olde Knowle B in Division Four, as all eight players lost their games. Alcester crashed to a 66-shot defeat as the home side picked up 18 points to the visitors’ nil.

In the over 60s section of the Heart of England League, the A team’s successes of the previous week came to an abrupt end with their visit to the dreaded top green at Ye Olde Knowle A.

Only John Slater (21-17) was able to produce a winning card as Alcester crashed to a 56-shot defeat. This 15-1 setback drops Alcester down to third place in the Division Two table.

The B team in Division Four completed their first double of the season when they entertained Moorpool A.

The previous week’s single-point win was improved upon with a ten-shot victory as captain John Willis led the way with a 21-8 success, well supported by Jean Craddock (21-11) and Margaret D’Elia and Trish Barry (both 21-19).

Alcester picked up 14 points to the visitors’ two to give the club their best result of the week.
