Dutch delight for town swimmers

REDDITCH Swimming Club members turned on the style to produce their best performance at the annual Netherlands Invitational Swimming Gala in the Olympic-standard Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium, Eindhoven.

Teams from across Europe and one from Indonesia competed over the two days and, although swimmers are competing for their individual clubs, there is a great deal of national pride and a desire among them to present themselves to the highest standards and achieve their very best times.

This was Redditch SC’s third appearance in the gala and yet again they exceeded expectations. In 2015 Redditch won two medals, before improving that figure by 11 a year later, and this year a team of 18 swimmers aged from nine to 16 won 18 medals.

Anna Farr (ten) won gold in 100m breaststroke and bronze in 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.

Emily Farr (12) won silver in 200m breaststroke and bronze in 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke.

Daniel Holmes (13) clinched bronze in 200m individual medley and Josie Ross (16) won gold in 200m individual medley, silver in 100m freestyle and bronze in 100m butterfly.

Amelia Wise (nine) claimed silver in 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke and bronze in 100m backstroke and 100m individual medley.

Jamie Wright (13) won bronze in 50m backstroke and, in addition to the successes of winning medals, all of the town swimmers raised their game to achieve a massive total of personal best times and a high number of times which will qualify swimmers to compete in the 2018 Worcester County Championships.

RSC vice-chairman Paul Hartland said: “Many days each week all of the swimmers at the club train and train hard. Being a competitive swimmer must be one of the most demanding and challenging sports.

“The success achieved this year is a real credit to their dedication and to the skills and commitment of all the coaches at the club. The memories achieved on tour will stay with the swimmers forever.”

Redditch swimmers attending the event were Louisa Baldwin, Matthew Bell, Ryan Crumpton, Anna Farr, Emily Farr, Lucy Hatfield, Natalie Hatfield, Lauren Hartland, Daniel Holmes, Emily Holmes, James Mucklow, Jessica Mowat, Josie Ross, Charlotte Sullivan, Rosie Ward, Amelia Wise, Ben Wright and Jamie Wright.
