ALVECHURCH claimed a crucial 2-0 win against relegation rivals Stamford in midweek to move six points clear of the drop zone.

A penalty from Felix Miles and late goal from Kieran Wakefield earned the points for Church at Lye Meadow.

The result means Church sit 16th in the Southern League Premier Central, six points above the relegation zone.

And Alvechurch boss Kyle Storer praised his side for showing bravery on the ball in victory against Stamford.

Storer said: “I’m over the moon. We deserved it in the end.

“We got bullied physically in the first half. Stamford came up with a good gameplan.

“We rode our luck in the first half, just losing those little individual battles.

“We changed formation in the second half and started beating them up a little bit and were also brave with the football.

“Then we took the game away from them and our game management was excellent.”

After a goalless first period, Church broke the deadlock on 65 minutes when Miles scored from the penalty spot after he drew a foul in the box.

And the home side doubled their lead five minutes from time as Wakefield powered a shot through Stamford goalkeeper Tom Jackson.

Alvechurch are next in action against league leaders Harborough Town on Saturday, March 21 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
