FOOTBALL - Alvechurch beaten by Banbury after victory at Royston

JAMES Fry felt his side ‘were not at the races’ following a frustrating 1-0 home defeat against Banbury United.

An own goal from Krystian Pearce in first-half injury time settled the game at Lye Meadow.

That came after Church claimed an impressive 2-0 win away at Royston Town and Fry insists his side must learn how to break teams down after slipping to their second defeat of the season.

Fry said: “It was a poor game, not a great advert at all, we missed an unbelievable chance in the first minute, if we score that, the game changes massively.

“There was no real quality on show, they made it really difficult for us to break them down and we resorted to a different style and it wasn’t good enough.

“I don’t think we were at the races, we couldn’t get going, the frustrating thing for me is that we’re going to have days like this, especially at home.

“We’ve just got to find ways to break teams down when they sit in because it’s tough.

“We need a reaction across the board, Banbury did the dark arts really well and I expect the same again this weekend.

“The boys have got to learn quickly about that side of the game and we’ve got to show our quality.”

Against Banbury, the game’s only goal came at the end of the first half as Pearce inadvertently turned a cross from the right into his own net.

However, Church secured their first away win of the season against Royston at Garden Walk.

Church broke the deadlock on 18 minutes when Kieran Wakefield produced a superb finish over Royston goalkeeper Nemanja Grubor from distance.

And the visitors doubled their lead six minutes later as Tyrone Barnett lashed home from inside the box after good work from Dan Sweeney down the right.

Alvechurch are next in action in the FA Cup against Anstey Nomads on Saturday, August 31 with kick-off at 3pm at Cropston Road.
