DAN Sweeney’s injury-time debut goal rescued a point for Alvechurch in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Barwell.

Sweeney scored his first goal for the club four minutes into injury time after Jaanai Gordon netted at the end of the first half as Church came from two goals down at Kirkby Road.

The result means Alvechurch remain in the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone, six points from safety with two games in-hand on AFC Sudbury who are immediately above the drop.

Barwell broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Ethan Hill fired a low effort past Brad Walker from 20-yards out.

And the home side doubled their lead on 41 minutes as Trey Charles powered the ball home from close range after the ball broke kindly into his path.

Church reduced the deficit in first-half injury time when Gordon scored from the penalty spot after Nick Clayton-Phillips drew a foul in the box.

And the visitors levelled the game at the death as Josh Dugmore’s cross from the right travelled all the way through to Sweeney at the back post who lashed a shot into the roof of the net.

The draw brings an end to Church’s five-game losing run in the league as the club picked up their first point since November.

Alvechurch are next in action away at Malvern Town on Tuesday, January 9 in the Worcestershire Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the HDanywehere Community Stadium.
