FOOTBALL - Alvechurch defender Harry Williams seals Walsall move

ALVECHURCH have sold promising young defender Harry Williams to League Two side Walsall for an undisclosed fee.

Williams spent pre-season on trial with the Football League side and, after impressing the club’s coaching staff, has signed a one-year deal with the Saddlers with the option of a one year extension.

The 20-year-old became a crucial figure in Church’s backline last season and featured from the bench as Ian Long’s side stunned League One Cheltenham Town in the first round of the FA Cup.

He spent time on trial at then Premier League Leicester City in May and had brief stints at Burnley and Aston Villa prior to joining Church in 2022.

Alvechurch chairman, Richard Thorndike, tweeted: “A fine player and a fine young man. Couldn’t be happier for him.

“The work he’s put in every day this season has earned him a top move to a great club.”

Walsall head coach, Mat Sadler, said: “Harry has had a really strong season at Alvechurch. The links we have to the local non-league scene alerted me to him and he’s been with us for the last 10 days.

“Myself and others at the football club have got fantastic links with local non-league clubs. I’ve been listening and looking out for young, hidden gems coming up and I feel Harry fits that profile.

“We really thank Alvechurch, Mark Fogarty and the board of directors there for allowing us to have him with us and during that time we feel he has gone from strength to strength.

“Not only has he earned the contract, he’s really improved and shown he can cope with the levels that we train at and he impacts the training sessions.”
