FOOTBALL - Clarke hoping for home points after Redditch United ease to Sudbury win

MATT Clarke hopes Redditch United can pick up their first home win of the season against Kettering Town this weekend.

The Reds romped to a comprehensive 4-0 win at AFC Sudbury last weekend as Danny King, Aram Soleman, AJ George and Alex Cameron all found the net at the MEL Group Stadium.

The result lifts Redditch up to sixth in the Southern League Premier Central table and boss Clarke now wants to earn a first home win of the season after successive away victories.

Clarke said: “You go away from home in this league and you get a point, you’re happy, if you get all three you’re delighted.

“To go to a team that have only conceded one goal in each of their three games, it’s really pleasing to score four goals and defensively we were really solid.

“Kettering will be a really tough game, they’ve scored two goals in every game they’ve played, their problem has been defensively, they’ve conceded too many.

“They are a very good side, the manager is bringing players in, they’ve just not had the rub of the green, they’ve been in every single game, it’ll be a real tough test for us.

“If we go into the game thinking it’s a gimme we’ll be in real trouble, they were a National League North side last season.

“It’s important that we try to get off the mark at home, we’ve won two on the bounce away from home which is great but we need to get more points at home.”

Redditch took the lead against Sudbury on 21 minutes when George picked out King in the box and the striker finished the chance at the second attempt.

And the visitors doubled their lead on 36 minutes as Soleman won a penalty before converting the resulting spot kick into the bottom left corner.

The Reds added a third goal in first half injury time as George fired a sublime free-kick into the top-right corner from the left edge of the penalty area.

And Redditch won another penalty on 65 minutes after George drew a foul in the area as Cameron stepped up and fired the ball into the bottom right corner to complete the scoring.

Redditch are next in action at home to Kettering Town on Saturday, August 26 with kick-off at 3pm at the Valley Stadium.

The Reds then travel to local rivals Alvechurch on Monday, August 28 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
