JAMES Fry insists Alvechurch are ‘up for the fight’ against relegation after his side secured a late 1-0 win away at AFC Sudbury.

Dan Sweeney’s 89th minute goal at the MEL Group Stadium earned Church a first league win since October.

And with Alvechurch three points from safety in the Southern League Premier Central relegation places, Fry insists the club are up for the challenge as Church try and climb out of the drop zone.

Fry said: “Hopefully, we can build upon this now, we know we’re in a fight, we’re down for it, every single person right from the very top of the club are all up for the fight.”

“I’m proud, I knew the week as a whole was going to be a big week, there’s never been a real doubt in the dressing room, we’re all backing each other, staff and players.

“We’ve had to work really hard, it means a hell of a lot, we need that one moment sometimes if you keep the back door shut and we’ve put away the once chance that mattered.

“We’ve had no momentum whatsoever, we’ve built up some momentum recently, the word is belief, we just needed that break, that one result and to get what we deserve out of a game.”

The game’s only goal came one minute from time when Sweeney won the ball in the Sudbury box before firing home from close range to spark wild celebrations on the Church bench.

Alvechurch are next in action at home to Hitchin Town on Saturday, January 20 with kick-off at 3pm at Lye Meadow.
