FOOTBALL - Late King goal keeps Redditch top after Halesowen victory

DANNY King’s late goal helped Redditch United remain top of the table with a 2-1 victory away at Halesowen Town.

King struck five minutes from time after Jack Concannon scored his first goal for the club earlier in the second-half with Miracle Okafor on target for Halesowen at The Grove.

And the result means Redditch remain top of the Southern League Premier Central table, one point clear of Needham Market who have four games in-hand.

The Reds took the lead on 57 minutes as Concannon controlled Aram Soleman’s through ball before coolly finishing past Dan Platt after taking the ball wide of the Yeltz goalkeeper.

However, Halesowen deservedly drew level on 78 minutes when Okafor pounced to finish a loose ball from close range after the Yeltz kept the Reds pinned inside their own half for several minutes.

Matt Clarke’s side responded to reclaim the lead on 85 minutes as King won back possession before cutting in from the right and firing a low effort into the bottom left corner from 20-yards out.

The Reds survived an almighty goalmouth scramble at the death before Richard Gregory sent an overhead kick attempt over the bar as Clarke’s men held on to secure another crucial victory.

Redditch are next in action at home to Alvechurch on Monday, February 12 in the semi-finals of the Worcestershire Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Valley Stadium.
