FOOTBALL - Quickfire goals see Alvechurch slip to home defeat against Telford

JAMES Fry felt Alvechurch were second best in both boxes after slipping to a 2-0 home defeat against play-off chasing AFC Telford United.

Telford scored both of their goals in a six-minute period in the first half as Byron Moore broke the deadlock before Ethan Patterson put through his own net at Lye Meadow.

Despite the defeat, Church boss Fry felt his side had the better of the play in the middle of the park but came up short in the opposition penalty area.

Fry said: “I was pleased with our performance level and how we started the game, to sum the game up they were better than us in both boxes and we were better than them in-between the boxes.

“Ultimately, it’s what you do in the boxes that gets you the points, I’m comfortable with that performance level, we looked like a team who you could see what we were trying to do.

“We just came up short in the top third, we moved the ball well and you can where we’re trying to move to in possession, we were front-footed in transition.

“They blitzed us for five minutes, we couldn’t get out and as a team we’ve got to find a way to get through those little periods, that’s the difference between the teams in the play-offs and the mid-table teams.”

Telford took the lead on 19 minutes when Moore’s half-volley from 25-yards out bounced once on its way into the net.

And the visitors doubled their lead on 25 minutes as Patterson smashed the ball into the roof of his own net from close range in an attempt to clear Jordan Piggott’s powerful shot.

Alvechurch are next in action away at Kettering Town on Saturday, March 23 with kick-off at 3pm at Latimer Park.
