MATT Clarke felt his side showed ‘good character’ after Redditch United rescued a late point in a 1-1 draw with Spalding United.
The Reds drew level on 81 minutes courtesy of Johnny Johnston’s strike after Theo Hudson put Spalding ahead at the Valley Stadium.
The result leaves Redditch fifth in the Southern League Premier Central table, inside the play-off places on goals scored, and Clarke admits his team must improve when on the ball.
Clarke said: “We changed shape so it was new to the boys, some found it difficult, we just didn’t quite get going, we really struggled.
“Spalding were quite dominant, we just couldn’t get to grips with it, we tweaked a couple of things and we were a lot better and brighter in the second half.
“There was a lack of quality, we didn’t keep the ball well enough, we need to better in possession but we were a threat.
“The boys showed really good character, we kept going and ended up getting a point.
“You’ve got to be very careful when you come into a building, when I took over they were sixth in the table so they must have been doing some good things.
“When you’re building a team, you’ve got to be mindful of bringing in the right personnel.
“We are speaking and will be speaking to more players this week but they’ve got to be the right ones who make us better because the team has been doing well enough.
“Hitchin is always a difficult place to go, they’re a better side than their league position suggests.
“They play football in the right way and it will be a test, hopefully we can get one or two more in the building just to help us and make us stronger.”
Spalding broke the deadlock on 70 minutes as debutant Hudson forced home a cross from the left at Callum Smith’s near post.
However, the Reds equalised on 81 minutes when Johnston drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner after Spalding failed to deal with Jahvan Davidson-Miller’s cross from the right.
Redditch are next in action against Hitchin Town on Saturday, December 7 with kick-off at 3pm at Top Field.
