MATT Clarke felt it was important for his side to bounce back with a win after the Reds eased to a 3-0 victory against Hitchin Town.

The Reds took an early lead through Musa Ceesay’s header before Alex Cameron and substitute Johnny Johnston sealed the points in the second half.

And a bumper 1,223-strong crowd watched on at Valley Stadium after Redditch made the game free entry to all.

Reds boss Clarke stressed the importance of his side’s victory which leaves the club third in the Southern League Premier Central table, having conceded late on to draw with Stamford in their last outing.

Clarke said: “It was important to bounce back, Hitchin are a really good side, we had to be patient and wait for the right moments and opportunities, we thoroughly deserved it in the end.

“It was unbelievable from the supporters, they were magnificent, to come out in freezing conditions, to have 1,200 people here was brilliant.

“Hopefully, we can get a lot more people in for the derby against Bromsgrove and keep the place buzzing and bouncing.

“We’ll be ramming it in to the players about how important the game is locally and about the local bragging rights.

“Form goes out of the window, there’ll be another big crowd, it’ll be a tough game and on their day they can cause any team problems.

“We’re really confident at the moment, we just want to keep pushing and putting more points on the board.”

Redditch broke the deadlock on 10 minutes when Ceesay glanced Callum Rowe’s corner from the right into the bottom left corner at the near post.

The Reds eventually doubled their lead on 78 minutes as Cameron nodded in another Rowe corner from virtually on the goal line despite furious Hitchin protests.

And the home side secured the points five minutes from time when substitute Johnston produced a clinical finish into the bottom left corner from AJ George’s through ball.

Redditch are next in action at home to local rivals Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday, January 20 with kick-off at 3pm at Valley Stadium.
