FOOTBALL - Redditch United Women held by Shifnal in friendly

REDDITCH United Women were held to a 1-1 draw by Shifnal Town Ladies in their second pre-season outing at The Acoustafoam Stadium in Shropshire.

The home side took an early lead, finding the net after just eight minutes, after Redditch goalkeeper Fleur Johnson-Derrick had made a fantastic save to push a shot around the post moments earlier.

And Derrick came to Redditch’s rescue again on the half-hour mark when she made a fine stop after Shifnal’s striker had got in behind the Reds defence.

The visitors struggled in the opening 45 minutes with very few shots on goal.

However, Redditch were much-improved in the second period as they pressed their opponents from the outset.

Chances were still a premium until Nieve Newman almost caught the Shifnal goalkeeper out at her near post with a well-struck free-kick.

Academy product Derrick proved her worth again with another crucial save before Redditch drew level on 77 minutes when Chloe Bailey found the bottom left corner.

Next up for Redditch United Women is a trip to Malvern Town on Sunday, July 31 with kick-off at 2pm at the HDanywhere Stadium.
