FOOTBALL - Reds beaten by last-minute penalty at Nuneaton

REDDITCH United suffered a last-minute defeat away at joint league leaders Nuneaton Borough as Ryan Beswick’s penalty ensured the Reds remained without a win in 2023.

Beswick’s penalty came in the final minute of normal time and extends Redditch’s winless run in the league to three matches after defeat at Liberty Way.

The result means Redditch sit ninth in the Southern League Premier Central table.

And the game was played in tricky conditions as rain hammered down onto the turf with first-half chances at a premium.

Reds goalkeeper Adam Harrison palmed away Charlie Down’s effort which marked his only notable save in the first 45 minutes.

The visitors had arguably the best chance of the half when Reece Flanagan’s shot stung the palms of Nuneaton goalkeeper Tony Breeden.

And the two teams traded chances in the second period as Bernard Mensah curled an effort wide from outside the penalty area before Luke Benbow shot wide at the other end.

However, the deadlock was finally broken in the final minute when Kane Richards was brought down by Harvey Gregson in the box and Beswick scored the resulting spot kick.

Redditch are next in action against Bedford Town TONIGHT (Monday, January 9) with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Trico Stadium.
