FOOTBALL - Reds guarantee top-half finish with Easter wins

REDDITCH United have guaranteed a top-half finish after the Reds claimed narrow 1-0 wins away at Bedford Town and at home to local rivals Alvechurch respectively.

The Reds took maximum points from their Easter fixtures as Jack Byrne scored the only goal against Bedford and Martin Riley headed in a late winner to beat Alvechurch at the Trico Stadium.

And the results mean Redditch sit eighth in the Southern League Premier Central table with just two matches left to play.

Reds boss Matt Clarke said: “The players are running on empty, it’s the end of the season, I need a break, it’s taken a lot out of us as a group.

“We’ve got a cup final to look forward to which is another good occasion for the football club and everybody connected with it.

“We dominated from start to finish [against Alvechurch], it was total domination, we missed a number of chances that were clear cut.

“We were nowhere near clinical enough in front of goal, we should have put the game to bed a lot earlier than we did but we were patient, pulled them apart at times and in the end we got our just rewards.”

Against Bedford, Byrne’s seventh-minute goal proved decisive at The Eyrie as the Redditch skipper flicked home Reece Flanagan’s free-kick.

And the Reds won by a single goal on Easter Monday as Riley came off the bench to score the winner on 76 minutes when he rose highest to meet another pinpoint Flanagan free-kick.

Redditch travel to Mickleover on Saturday, April 15 with kick-off at 3pm at Station Road.
